DESCRIPTION :

Miniature by François-Hippolyte Desbuissons (circa 1745-after 1807), also named HIPOLITE.

Painted around 1790, Hipolite gives here an atypical work. More specialized in profiles painted  in " grisaille", or in imitation of cameo, the artist delivers here a portrait painted in front and in color, even if the chromatic scale, rather pearly, is quite close to his usual palette.

The composition repeats that of the self-portrait of Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun with her daughter, painted in 1786. The painting was so successful that many young mothers asked their painters to paint them with their children in this composition. Augustin also had to yield to this request.

The young woman wears long powdered hair, Hipolite paints it in the manner of his usual grisaille, but he colours the work of rose bushes whose green foliage matches with the bench and the rich emerald adornment of the young mother.
