Important miniature by Sir William John Newton (1785-1869), signed and dated on right border : W. J. Newton 1827 and on the verso. Miniature identified on the reverse : portrait of Mrs Goad (later Lady Bradford), Wm J. Newton Pinxit, at 8 Argyle street, in 1827. This famous miniature was exhibited at the Albertina Museum in Vienna in 1965, to illustrate the "Masterpieces of the European Miniature" no. 291 in the catalogue. Sir William John Newton was one of the most important miniaturists of his time. A painter of Queen Victoria, King William IV and Queen Adelaide, he spent his entire career in London.His works can be found in the Victoria and Albert museum, at Windsor Castle and in many English collections Le Schidlof devoted a highly praiseworthy article to him in his dictionary (the miniature in Europe, 1964)TECHNIQUE:
