DESCRIPTION :

Historical miniature portrait painted  by Francois Dumont (1751-1831)  at the beginning of his career, circa 1775 (not signed as usual at this period of François Dumont ).

The sitters are  Louis Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon, marquis de Saint Véran (1712-1759), his wife Angélique Louise born Talon du Boullay (1715-1788), and one of their grand daughters .

The marchioness de Saint Vérant shows to the little girl a map of Canada ( we can read Amérique septentrionale and mer Pacifque on it), a compass in her hand, she explains to the child the battles of her famous grandpa died in Canada . The girl indicated the portrait with her hand and composition forms a boucle .

Montcalm is very famous in Canada and in France
