CHARLIER Jacques (1720-1790) , VENUS BRAIDING GARLANDS OF FLOWERS, MINIATURE CIRCA 1750-1770
Beautiful miniature by Jacques Charlier (1720-1790), showing Venus, naked, braiding garlands of flowers, . The work is characteristic of the master’s own hand : worked in a thick gouache for the bases, the shadows of the body made of a wide green dotted , painted on ivory (material used by the artist for works of small sizes). Charlier often took over the paintings of his contemporary François Boucher, with whom he worked closely. He also created many subjects in miniature. The Louvre has a miniature of the same vein (inventory RF4274), the others are now in London at the Wallace Collection.TECHNIQUE:
