CHARLIER Jacques (1720-1790) , VENUS GETTING OFF HER CHARIOT, LARGE MINIATURE, CIRCA 1770
Very large miniature by Jacques Charlier (1720-1790), showing Venus, naked, descended from her chariot. At her feet, Loves preparing her arrows or gathering doves (love symbols). The work is characteristic of the master’s own hand : worked in the thick gouache for the background, the shadows of the body made of a wide green dotted. Charlier often repeated the paintings of his contemporary François Boucher, with whom he worked closely. He also created many miniature subjects. Painter of the King, he had a huge success. His miniatures, on large-format velines, are rare in France (the Louvre has only one : inventory RF4270), most having disappeared during the French Revolution, or now in London at the Wallace CollectionTECHNIQUE:
